Oliva Nova ‘silly hat’ day
Sponsored by Joe Schulein

The happy members of WCGS came to Oliva Nova expecting the usual jovial day of
golfing and camaraderie. We got the camaraderie OK but instead of golf, what we
were to witness was nature at it’s most awesome. We’ve none of us seen anything
like it!

To say that it blew a gale is but an understatement. Imagine a wind so strong that
it does not allow you to complete a full swing when playing one of those big headed
drivers so that you are forced to use an iron. Imagine a ball, which would normally
cover a full 200 yards coming back to your feet in the way of a well-trained retriever.
Imagine playing around trees that were blown clean out of the ground only moments
before.

Well, being the type of person that
qualifies into a true WCGS member, the
‘game’ commenced in spite of the
conditions. The balls were hit and
followed round the course in true military
style. We marched right and we
marched left. Some even marched back.
Many spent time ‘fishing’ for their
wayward balls resting in the million
lakes. Many balls were lost and a prize
should be awarded to the hardy and ever
persevering Colin Butterworth who is said
to have lost 24 before he stopped the
count. But, surprise surprise, Mr John
Williams or ‘el presidente dos’ if you will,
came back having lost none. We later
found that he had tethered his ball with
a long piece of string.

The day was themed as a silly hat day and the effort made by some members
was a joy. Though Mr Ray Garbutt got the prize for displaying the only ‘birdie’
of the day, and that in his hat’s bream, personally I would have given the prize
to the already mentioned Colin who sported an old plastic shopping bag and
who claimed to represent an ‘old bag lady’. I agree with all he said but not with the
lady part.

In spite of the wind, one or two people came in with remarkable scores. Our pro
Stary Gone who plays of scratch manages a dozen pars but no prize. These went
to Michael O’Reilly 3rd, El Presidente DOS 2nd and a Callaway golf bag to
Rod ‘stato’ Edgerton. Prizes by sponsor Joe Schulein were very generous.
