The WCGS turned up at the Oliva Nova
golf course on 27th February and what a bunch
of odd balls we were. The blame is fairly and squarely
placed on the gullibility of the
followers of Auntie Beeb’s weather forecasters. Some
wore their colour coded summer
outfits whilst a few sported their Barbers and souwesters
worn over thermals,
expecting nothing less than a Nordic tempest. After
a misty start, the day turned out
to be sunny and bright with the temperature staying
at a constant 20C.
The day’s antagonists met in the liquid
breakfast bar, where Mr. S Lamb caused shock
and consternation by treating a fellow member to some
nectar and then, as if that
was not enough, he even treated the bar hostess to
a whole euro tip. The only time
when he is normally seen to approach the bar is when
he needs change. Yes fans,
you read it here first!
Mr. White Coast Golf Society himself,
“El Presidente Dos” John Williams was noticeably
absent. Some say that he was scared off believing
that he’d be lumbered into again
paying for other people’s games as at the previous
meeting. In fact the tall, dark,
gravel voiced, Ex-Tony Curtis double and look alike,
had to go to the Alicante airport
to await his ever-wandering wife. She could have waited
at the arrivals for the
6-7 hours, but John just has to be the gentleman.
After the OFF, Oliva and its countless
lakes proved that it’s not to be taken lightly.
The 28 players managed to lose 91 golf balls and many
a strange story was told after
the event. Here are but a few;
A real life 21stC miracle manifested on the waters
when Brian Woodhouse played
directly out of a lake and did not even get his feet
wet. Unfortunately though, the ball
went out of bounds and into/onto (?) someone’s home.
Four impeccably dressed but lost German golfers were
asking the way to the first
tee on the 16th fairway – just some 2 miles away.
Ray Garbutt hit a ball hard into a small tree on the
16th, which retaliated by
venomously returning the ball on to his wrist, which
is now well wrapped, into a
sympathy bandage. Agh didlums!
Our generous sponsors IBEX insurance (Javea office)
provided each player with a
new ball, which was to be played until lost. Surviving
balls to be drawn from a hat for
a generous prize. The winner, by having the only surviving
ball in the hat was
Rod “Statto” Edgerton who not only took his prize
but also remembered to ask for his
golf ball back. We had no idea until then that his
heart too was pumping Scottish blood.
(It was later reported that he’d gone round using
only his trusted putter, which
explains the 6-hour game behind).
Mr. M. Moran of Bonnie Scotland, was nowhere to be
seen after the game knowing
that he was not due a prize and as the bar was full
of thirsty colleagues, he had
decided to head early for home.

The course at Oliva Nova is known for its friendly
and hardworking staff and for
always being well presented in superb condition. Unfortunately,
on the day, the
greens were undergoing the usual annual soil aerating,
drilling, sanding, top dressing
and general manicure so the surfaces were temporarily
lumpy and slow to say the least. Unavoidable work
this may be, but the scorecard totals resemble a horror
story
reflecting the many three putts on the day. Give it
a couple of weeks and we’ll praise
these greens as much as ever. As the saying goes “a
snip here and a snip there,
and Bob’s your auntie”!
