Nothing Fawlty?

It was typical La Sella. They get you to turn up early but then the bar isn't open for coffee. To be fair, they did open it shortly after we arrived so there was nothing fawlty there. It was going to be a clear blue sky and warm kind of a day, so there was nothing fawlty with the weather. And, the fairways and greens were very good, so there was nothing fawlty with the course. So, if there was nothing fawlty, who would Tower above the rest?

Well, flying in especially to play, was our very own Basil Fawlty, aka Steve Laird. Many of our newer members will not have seen him before, so we have added a photo of him below. He was a bit younger when this photo was taken but you can still see the likeness. And, whilst he didn't do it on the day, he can still do that walk. Don't mention it to Christoph!

Now retired from running the hotel, he just concentrates on his game, and it showed today. 40 points was just enough to scoop the €40 first prize. We haven't to tell Sybil about his winnings, and Manuel? Que? Did you know Paul Harrison missed a 2 foot putt on the 18th to score 41 points?? "I know nothing".

Full results as follows;

Overall winner

Steve Laird - 40 points.

Division 1

Winner. Steve Laird - 40 points

Runner Up. Craig Longstaff - 36 points

Division 2

Winner. Paul Harrison - 40 points

Runner Up. Ray Gambrill - 38 points

NP's

Hole 13. Wayne Stallings avoided the trees down the left, and the bunker on the right, to finish closest. Birdie?? Nope, settled for his par.

Hole 15. Gary Stone hit a 9 iron which stopped Stone dead just two feet past. Birdie?? Coudn't miss.

LBS

What can you do? The new sheet contained the formula needed to work this out, but people either didn't believe it, or thought they knew better. The answer we were looking for was 30, which nobody got. Captain Jordan was our best guesser with 33. Spookily, €33 will rollover to FDL.

CBKO

The two remaining round 2 matches were played.

Tony Bowers v Jordan Duffy

This was going to be interesting. We had an in form Tony playing against an out of form Jordan, and Tony had three shots as well. On paper, looked like an easy win for Tony, but no. Jordan's game was back. He took the game to the 17th but Tony kept his cool. A win for Tony 2&1.

Sean Carr v Russ Hedges

Russ admits to feeling the pressure of CBKO matches and doesn't always perform to his usual high standards. Meanwhile, Sean, just gets on with it. Oh, and he did have 8 shots which heaped more pressure on Russ. It turned out to be too much. A win for Sean 4&3. He celebrated his win by buying himself a snazzie new pair of shorts that he had spotted in the shop. He thought they were on sale for €14. Should have gone to specsavers. They were €140. They did look good though.

Health & Safety

  • Health

At the end of last year we donated €440 to MABS, which they were very appreciative of. They wanted to let us know what they do with donations such as ours and their Infogragh is below. Our money has helped some people who really need it.

  • Safety

There was an incident on the course which needs to be brought to attention. An approach shot to a green was taken before the group ahead had left it. All due apologies were given but there could have been a serious injury. So, please, let's make sure of our distances and, if in doubt, just wait for the green to clear.

Back in the clubhouse, there was something fawlty. Our computer software was playing up. The most common technical reasons that cause a fawlt might be a power outage, or virus, maybe malware, or a trojan, possibly a bug. It was none of these our Captain informed us. No, it was a glitch. AI (Jordan and Tony) sorted it out.

Our next game is at Font del Llop on Wednesday 11th June.

As ever, this game will be sponsored by Blevins Franks, International Tax and Wealth Management. peter.hodgkinson@blevinsfranks.com

Licence to Play

We expect Members to obtain the appropriate Federated Licence valid in Spain. This licence grants permission to play on all the Courses on our schedule and includes the liability and accident insurance required by Royal Decree 849/1993.

As a general guide, resident Members should be looking to obtain an Annual Licence with handicap from their corresponding Spanish Regional Federation. In the Valencia Region the cost is €105.70. There is a one off joining fee of €15.

Non resident Members can also obtain an Annual Licence if they wish. If not, they should purchase a One Day Licence at each course which affiliates them to the Federation for that day's play. A One Day Licence costs €2.

Congratulations, Basil and Mr. Harrison. Your endeavours around La Sella has resulted in an extraordinary meeting of the handicap committee, who favour the old SSS system.
