There's always 1

Today was a special day. It had everything. We had new faces aplenty. Adrian Scott MOT, Simon Parry, David Pell, and Paul Westerman. Sorry gents, but the nicest face back was our very own Gill Barrett, what a pleasure. It gets better. A full house, 28 players, no Levante lurgy, no rain, and it really was quite warm. Perfect.

And then, we had to try and play golf. Judging by the LBS selections before the game, we obviously thought we were a bunch of golfers. The actual number of balls lost tells a different story, but more on that later.

So, two divisions again. There would be winner and runner up in Div.1. Same for Div 2. And there would be an overall winner on the day. As it turned out though, there would be other winners.

Dave Smith celebrating his nearest the pin shot at the 11th. He called it a NP shot because a hole in one would have cost him a lot of money. There's always 1

But, there were 2. Sara Richardson was surprised and delighted at the 12th and 15th. Tidy tee shots and perfect putts resulted in 2 2's on her card. Quite rare, so worth noting. 5 and 4 points respectively, very handy. Two birdies in 4 holes, well played.

Celebrating her 2's wisely with a caña and not a tanque!
Celebrating her 2's wisely with a caña and not a tanque! Smart girl.

Maybe there were 3! Roger Miller, our blue octagenarian. He had a problem. He couldn't find the blue tees. We can't blame his eyesight, because he has had those done. And we can't blame signs of early onset, because he is "usually" there or thereabouts. What about his decision making, given the problem? Still quite sharp. Go further forward, play from the reds, and take the hit. He was down to 11 shots now from 21, but it didn't matter. Still too good. 40 points was more than enough.

Full results as follows.

Overall winner

Roger Miller - 40.

Division 1

Winner. Tony Bowers - 35

Runner Up. Adrian Scott - 35

Division 2

Winner. Roger Miller - 40

Runner Up. Dave Lesbirel - 37

NP's

Hole 8. Ray Gambrill

Hole 11. Dave Smith

Hole 14. Colin Grant

Ray got his par on 8. Dave didn't need to putt out on 11 but he did get a birdie on 12. Fair to say his game went TU after that. Unbelievably, Colin blobbed the 14th, but he did get a birdie on the ridiculously short, but notoriously difficult, 15th. Stupid game!

LBS

This is Mick Callanan's formula for working out the correct number. We all know that he normally gets it right. The formula produced the answer 73. However, he made a mistake. Instead of (-24 over x7), it should have been (-24 over y7), which gives the answer 87. Schoolboy error. €30 to rollover to Oliva. Sharpen your pencils!

Back in the clubhouse, our normally very calm Captain, saw red. He went blue in the face. Why? His computer told him that Roger Miller had scored 50 points. A murmur went round the terrace. Is this some kind of record? Or an error? He figured it out. It was an error, and Roger's playing handicap had to be adjusted. It just wasn't possible to do it there and then. He presented the awards with the best possible information at the time, with the caveat that the results would be reviewed and corrected as soon as he got back home to peace and quiet. This he did, which resulted in Roger still winning but with 40 points not 50, and Dave Lesbirel finishing second instead of Dave Lawson. Don't spend that money DL. Well done Captain.

Our next game is a league game against SAS on the Levante course on Thursday 3oth January.

Our next Society game is at Oliva on Wednesday 5th February. Even with an extra tee-time, that game is nearly full, only one place left, as we go to press.

As ever, this game will be sponsored by Blevins Franks, International Tax and Wealth Management. peter.hodgkinson@blevinsfranks.com

Licence to Play

We expect Members to obtain the appropriate Federated Licence valid in Spain. This licence grants permission to play on all the Courses on our schedule and includes the liability and accident insurance required by Royal Decree 849/1993.

As a general guide, resident Members should be looking to obtain an Annual Licence with handicap from their corresponding Spanish Regional Federation. In the Valencia Region the cost is €105.70. There is a one off joining fee of €15.

Non resident Members can also obtain an Annual Licence if they wish. If not, they should purchase a One Day Licence at each course which affiliates them to the Federation for that day's play. A One Day Licence costs €2.
