One good thing about El Saler
- Mar 5
- 3 min read
The weather forecast wasn't good. 15 of us were fully expecting to get wet, and blown to bits. It was windy, that's for sure, particularly around those holes close to the sea. It was a spectacular sight to see the waves crashing in, if you like that kind of a thing. We did see one kite surfer, but not for long. Last seen headed towards Cullera at a rate of knots!
Did it affect the golf? Er, yes. Low scores all round. Did everyone get wet? Luckily, no. Did anyone enjoy it? What was the one good thing? The UV Index was low. Simon Parry did think about going back to his car for his sunglasses, but he decided against it.
Here's a summary of the results:

LBS
We were full of doom and gloom right from the start. Most were predicting huge numbers of balls would be lost. Not so. Only 24. Peter Dymyd was the most optimistic with his 34. Dave Smith was the most pessimistic (despite the 1-0 win the night before) with 62! €25 to rollover to Bonalba.

Coming up
Our next Society game is at Bonalba on Wednesday 18th March. Registration, via GolfDirecto, opens on Monday 9th March at 09.00. It closes on Sunday 15th March at 17.00. There is no payment online option for this game as Bonalba insist on payment at the course on the day of the game. So, please register without payment as soon as possible after 09.00 on the 9th. This will help our Competitions Secretary immensely, and it will save us having to chase or remind, bothering you, bothering us! Thanks in advance.
As ever, this game will be sponsored by Blevins Franks, International Tax and Wealth Management. peter.hodgkinson@blevinsfranks.com
Green Fees and Prizes
As we know, green fees are going up, and El Saler is one of the most expensive courses we play. The deal negotiated for us by Campbell Lamont was €75 to walk, and €90 for a shared buggy, which is what we charged. To be fair to all Members, we decided not to subsidise this game. At the same time, we decided not to increase fees further by loading for the normal cash prize fund. We paid what it cost, and no more.
Step forward our League Captain and Kaiser Chief, Christoph Dünwald. He, very kindly, agreed to sponsor the prizes for El Saler. From his own collection of fine wines, he was able to reward our winners with a variety of wines, even inviting them up to make their own choices. And, he made a special effort to get the right kind of Srixon balls for the NP prizes, just in case!
Thank you Christoph. Next time you see him, shake his hand.
Committee Meeting
Your Committee is meeting on the 27th March to discuss all the latest issues affecting our Society. We will be discussing Green Fees, Prizes, Subsidies, Subscriptions, and much more but If you have an issue that you want to raise, have a word with one of the Committee Members.

Sorry I missed it, still the weather is currently better in Blighty!
i enjoyed it - would be great to play when its not resembling scotland in november! Considering the rack rate of 125 i thought the negotiation rate of 75 was a very good deal. wish i could have stayed for a beer and compare wind tans !!
