Sweepergate

It was the usual warm welcome at La Sella. No coffee upon arrival, and milling about in the car park. Still, it was sunny and warm, and it all looked remarkably pleasant. And, it made a change to be early and local. How would everyone cope?

Here's a summary of the results:

Winners

Overall.

Mick Callanan - 38 points.

Division 1.

Winner. MIck Callanan - 38 points.

Runner Up. Martin Oddy - 37 points.

Division 2.

Winner. Paul Harrison - 38 points.

Runner Up. Viv Bacon - 36 points.

NP's

Hole 3. In 2 on a par 4. Pankaj Bakshi. Birdie? No, but a three pointer, and a hole won.

Hole 15. Ilona Mathieu. Birdie?? Never in doubt. Four points on the card.

LBS

Viv Bacon was our sweeper del día, (too far for Gary's Dad, bless), and she had to go chasing the round the car park to give everyone a chance. Remember, it was a triple rollover, and the sweep was likely to be north of €100. To give herself the best chance, she got there first and selected three numbers in a bloc. 31,32,33. Scandalous?? Well, it's two goes per person max, and surely that applies to the sweeper as well. Caught out, she offered to give one up to Christoph and she suggested he could take the lower number (31) or the higher number (33). Lost in translation, this became the middle number, and the winning number (32). €107 to Christoph.

Had she won though, that would have been the start of Sweepergate.

CBKO

There were three round of 16 matches played on the day.

Game 5. Barry Woodcock v Peter Dymyd.

Remember, Barry was the lucky loser from the qualifying round to replace the injured Roger Jennings, and he flew in especially the night before for the game. Could have been a bit jet lagged. A win for Peter 5&3.

Game 6. Ray Gambrill v Simon Parry.

Close on paper, close on the course. Ray Gambrill squeaked it 1up.

Game 8. Wayne Stallings v Pankaj Bakshi.

Pankaj had the shots (which he used wisely) and the edge for the most part, but Wayne was determined to sort his putting out, particularly those putts about two feet from the hole. He did that just in time with a birdie, par, par, par finish. Pankaj was 1 up on 18 but his tee shot landed in the front bunker. His first bunker shot rolled back in. His second bunker shot was relaxed, and perfect, but too late. The match finished A/S and will be replayed at La Galiana.

Coming Up. Pairs Scramble at Levante. Wednesday 8th July.

Our final game before the summer break. Time to relax and have some fun.

We will finish the first half of the 2026 season with a Pairs Texas Scramble. We are hoping to have 12 pairs, carefully selected by our Competition Secretary, to fight it out for top honours. More details on this as we get closer. Mark it in your diary though.

Back on the terrace, we welcomed back Gerry Clark for his first game of the year. Gerry wants to play socially and not competitively. No problem. And we also welcomed back an original founding player and stalwart, Steve Lamb. Steve hasn't played with us for at least two years, but he made a guest appearance today. It was nice to catch up with him.

Our next game is at La Galiana on Wednesday 10th June. Registration and Payment, via GolfDirecto, is open now. It closes on Sunday 7th JUne at 17.00. Please register as soon as you can. This will help our Competitions Secretary immensely, and it will save us having to chase or remind, bothering you, bothering us! Thanks in advance.

As ever, this game will be sponsored by Blevins Franks, International Tax and Wealth Management. venessa.shepherd@blevinsfranks.com
